Another step towards a greener future for shipping has been taken today after Eco Marine Power Co. Ltd. announced that it was starting a project to develop an eco solar ferry concept called Medaka. This solar ship design is being specifically developed to operate on urban waterways and will use an advanced solar-electric propulsion system. This eco-friendly propulsion system will allow the Medaka to operate emission free since the on-board batteries can be charged via the solar panels or from a shore based charging point.
The Medaka is called an eco ferry or eco ship because the entire design is driven by Eco Marine Power's environmentally friendly development approach. This means that designers not only strive to make the propulsion system as green as possible but also take into account the resources and energy required to build the Medaka. In addition the Medaka is designed so that as much of the vessel can be recycled as possible at the end if its service life.
The Medaka eco-ferry will be capable of carrying around 100 to 150 seated passengers and will be best suited to the role of an urban water bus or commuter ferry.
The project aims to revolutionise urban water transport by developing a solar-electric ferry that can be produced in significant numbers so that it becomes a cost effective option for ferry operators and ship owners globally.
Eco Marine Power will also investigate a number of te latest rapid battery charging technologies and concepts so that the Medaka can quickly recharge its batteries while alongside. The Medaka will also be fitted with a back-up biofuel or LNG powered generator.
