First public display of an EnergySail & Hybrid Battery Pack
Eco Marine Power (EMP) along with strategic partners Teramoto Iron Works and The Furukawa Battery Company recently exhibited a range of products & technologies at Sea Japan 2018 in Tokyo. A small EnergySail lab prototype was also publicly displayed for the first time along with its Automated Control System (ACS).
The patented EnergySail is a rigid sail device developed by EMP that will allow ships to harness the power of the wind and sun in order to reduce fuel costs plus lower noxious gas and CO2 emissions. The EnergySail is unlike any other sail and can be used even when a ship is at anchor or in port and will be included in the Aquarius MRE system trials that are scheduled to begin later this year.

EMP has begun joint studies with several ship owners regarding how the EnergySail can be used on a variety of ships including bulk ore carriers, cargo vessels and cruise ships and there was a lot of interest shown in the device during the event.
Also on display for the first time was a hybrid VRLA (valve regulated lead acid) battery kit for ships that incorporates UltraBattery® technology from the Furukawa Battery Company with a mounting frame kit supplied by Teramoto Iron Works. This hybrid battery kit can be easily installed onto new or existing ships for use with EMP's Aquarius Marine Solar Power solution or used for other ship and marine applications. Hybrid VRLA battery technology from Furukawa Battery is very safe, extremely reliable and has a long cycle life making it ideal for ship and land-based renewable energy projects.

The Furukawa Battery Company also demonstrated the operation of its MgBOX - a portable emergency battery. After water is added the MgBOX can provide power via two USB ports for up to 5 days and they can be used to re-charge portable devices such as smartphones and provide power to a small LED lights.

Other products shown during the three day event included flexible marine grade solar panels and the Aquarius Management and Automation System (MAS) with fuel oi consumption (FOC) monitoring. Strategic partner KEI System was co-located next to EMP at Sea Japan and the company showcased its new marine computer system - the 64S.
Sea Japan 2018 was held at the Tokyo Big Sight Convention Center between 11th - 13th April.
