Fuel and Emission Saving Devices & Technologies for Shipping
Eco Marine Power along with a number of technical partners has developed (or is working on the development) of a range of innovative solutions for ships that will improve their energy efficiency, reduce fuel consumption & lower their emissions of CO2 & greenhouse gases. These devices and technologies are incorporated into the Aquarius Eco Ship and Aquarius Eco Handymax design concepts plus can be integrated within the system architecture of the Aquarius MRE. solution. This combination of energy saving devices (ESD's) & technologies is known as Aquarius Energy Saving Devices & Technologies.
Aquarius Energy Saving Devices & Technologies
An overview of the products, systems & technologies that can be included in this ESD package are outlined below:
Aquarius Marine Renewable Energy (MRE)
The patented Aquarius MRE® is an advanced integrated system of rigid sails, marine-grade solar panels, energy storage modules, charging system and marine computers that enables ships to tap into renewable energy by harnessing the power provided by the wind and sun. The key elements of this system are the patented EnergySail® and the ship solar power system know as Aquarius Marine Solar Power or Aquarius MSP. This combination of energy saving devices could lead to annual fuel saving sof 10% or more depending on the configuration, type of ship and its operational profile.
However the EnergySail & ship solar power system can be also used as stand-alone technologies or combined with the other devices & technologies.

Advanced Propeller Designs & Propeller Caps
Advanced propeller designs are customized to maximise the efficiency of the ship's propulsion & are designed specifically for each type of vessel. When used in combination with a propeller cap or hub this configuration can provide fuel savings of 3% or more.
This energy saving & improvement in propulsion efficiency can deliver a return of investment in just one or two years depending on the type of this and can be retrofitted to existing ships or included in new ships being built.
Eco Marine Power along with its technical partners can prepare quick case studies & estimate the savings that might be possible for ship owners & ship managers. For more information please contact us using the online enquiry form.
Air Lubrication Systems (ALS)
Air lubrication systems eject a stream of air under the ship's hull to reduce friction between the hull and water. This is achieved since the air particles effectively reduce the drag in the boundary layer along the bottom of the ships hull. There are basically two types of air lubrication systems: constant flow and periodic or cyclic flow or blow-out types.
The cyclic flow type of ALS varies the amount of air being blown through vents under the ship and this can lead to increased energy savings thereby improving the ship's overall energy efficiency.
Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) Propellers
Propellers manufactured using carbon fiber-reinforced (CFRP) polymers are lighter than traditional propellers and can improve propulsion efficiency by 3-6% plus reduce the underwater noise radiated from the ship's propulsion.
Eco Marine Power is also studying how CFRP can be used for other ship energy saving devices & technologies.
Other advantages of CFRP propellers include:
- High strength.
- Low vibration.
- Improved maintenance.
