Detailed design of the Tonbo Hybrid Marine Power (HMP) solar-electric concept vessel has now commenced and Eco Marine Power Co Ltd is now working with a number of development partners in order to finalise the overall specification. The Tonbo design will incorporate the latest solar module, Lithium battery, propulsion and power management technologies in order to reduce fuel costs for operators/owners and reduce the emission of harmful gasses into the environment.
At present a number of different propulsion systems are being studied so that a solution can be found that is not only energy efficient but also kind to the marine environment. High efficiency solar modules will also be used and a unique mounting system for these modules is currently being developed as part of the overall Tonbo concept vessel design project.
By using an advanced on-board hybrid power control and energy management system the Tonbo will be able to significantly outperform vessels using traditional diesel propulsion systems in terms of energy efficiency and operation costs.
The solar modules on-board Tonbo can be lowered so that the vessel can pass under low bridges or adjusted so that they can take full advantage of the available solar energy. A rapid charging system will enable the installed Lithium batteries to be re-charged quickly when the Tonbo is alongside even for relatively short periods. The batteries will also be charged via the high efficiency solar modules and/or the on-board generator and allow the Tonbo to operate in all-electric mode in some cases, even at night.
